When we got our first pup, Nova, evening beach adventures became a regular occurrence. I became enamored with picking up pretty shells while we walked, and my husband would giggle and ask what on Earth I would do with all of them. I told him I’d make jewelry out of them one day when I was ready.
I am a perfectionist by nature (so much so that I have a tattoo that says perfection is a prison as a reminder on my arm) and so I’ve always been weary of attempting new skills for fear of failure. But after an entire year of collecting shells, I finally sat down and taught myself how to make the type of necklaces I knew I wanted to create, researched the necessary tools, etc. I had to remind myself that artistic endeavors are meant to be fun, and I let go of the expectation that I needed to be an expert before I began.
As I collected shells, I noticed that each of them reminded me of a special person in my life. I’d find a speckled shell that made me think of my spunky friend Erin, or I’d find a creamy white shell that made me think of my calming friend Kimi. I knew that if I were ever to create jewelry with the shells, each piece would be named for the person I felt the shell embodied. And so, She Shells was born. Each necklace embodies an extraordinary woman in my life and all she represents.
I have always been enthralled by jewelry and the act of accessorizing. I’m a firm believer that the perfect piece can take an outfit from good to great. I also strive to keep a minimal wardrobe, and so I’ve found that having special pieces of jewelry make my repeat outfits feel new and different.
She Shells is simple statement jewelry from the shores of Charleston, SC — a place I’ve called home for 10+ years now. Each piece tells the story of the woman its named for. And I’m honored to share those stories with all of you.
With so much love,
Tori
